Designed to inspire

Whether designing a building, a piece of furniture or a functional component for a car, it is always important to consider material choice early on in the design process.  Prepainted metal allows a high level of freedom to express that material choice, being either honest, with coatings which evoke the traditions of metalwork, or provocative, colouring metal in any way desired, to enhance the expression of the form.  But material choice is only one part of inspirational design - design that really stands out uses the material intelligently too.

Pengelly design

Renowned British designer Simon Pengelly designs furniture for many of the leading manufacurers and retailers.  When designing his META shelving for Modus furniture, he chose to use prepainted metal.  Here, he explains his choice.

"Pre coated steel eliminated many of the problems we were experiencing in a cost effective and environmentally friendly way. It meant that each component did not require post finishing and patterns, textures and colour could be achieved that are normally impossible. In conjunction with this, the aluminium paint finish mimics etched and anodised aluminium perfectly, and is in itself more durable. To me, we have achieved what was previously impossible."
